Launceston Tramway Museum

The Launceston Tramway Museum opened in 2006 and is located in the historic Inveresk precinct of Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. It’s just a short walk from the central business district and primarily showcases the history of the local Tasmanian community and the trams that once operated here.

The museum evolved from an old tram restoration society formed in the 1990s, which restored Launceston’s only remaining double-decker tram. It features a workshop, a large modern gallery, and access to railway tracks that run through the Inveresk precinct. At the Launceston Tramway Museum, you can take a tram ride to relive Launceston’s tram history from the 1940s, immersing yourself in the sights and sounds of old Inveresk along the way. In the modern gallery, you can enjoy Launceston’s oldest surviving film reel, experience whimsical and fantastical scenes on the big screen, and observe how the city has transformed since the Victorian era.

You can also try your hand at hands-on DIY projects, such as restoring Launceston’s first tram, or explore a tram that has been converted into a chicken coop and uncover the stories of its past. The museum is open from January to April, with tram rides available on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
