Hobart is located at the mouth of the Derwent River in southeastern Tasmania, serving as the capital and most populous city of the Australian state of Tasmania. It is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney and the twelfth largest. As the financial and administrative hub of Tasmania, Hobart also serves as the home port for Antarctic research expeditions for both Australia and France.
