Adelaide Zoo

Located in the northern part of Adelaide, South Australia, Adelaide Zoo opened to the public in 1883. It is the second oldest zoo in Australia, covering an area of 8 hectares, and is one of the city’s most well-known zoological attractions.

Adelaide Zoo houses over 300 species of animals and birds from various regions, with a total of more than 1,800 individuals. The zoo is divided into different themed areas based on the animals’ native habitats, including the Asian Zone, Australian Zone, Asian Rainforest Birds Aviary, Children’s Zoo, African Zone, South American Zone, Australian Bird House, and Marmoset Area. Each section features unique species or birds.

The biggest stars at Adelaide Zoo are the two giant pandas from China, “Wang Wang” and “Fu Ni.” Their enclosure, “Bamboo Forest Retreat,” is equipped with climate control systems both indoors and outdoors. With Adelaide’s distinct four seasons providing a suitable climate for giant pandas, a special bamboo forest was planted to welcome them. The pandas receive star treatment here—visitor meet-and-greet sessions are limited to specific times.

Adelaide Zoo places strong emphasis on education, featuring dedicated areas such as “Zoo Discovery” and the “Children’s Zoo” to help students and children learn about animals and raise environmental awareness. In 2009, a new Environment Pavilion was added, offering opportunities for night walks, tours, and research.
