Elizabeth Bay House
Introduction Designed by John Verge, this early colonial-era building was one of the most fashionable structures of its time, constructed from Sydney sandstone in a simple yet elegant style. The house was built between 1835 and 1839 for Alexander Macleay, and the Macleay family lived here until 1911. The most important features of the house are its oval saloon and graceful, sweeping staircase, which are widely regarded as among the finest examples of Australian architecture. Most of the rooms are open to the public and are furnished and decorated in the Regency style.
