The former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower

Introduction

The former Kowloon-Canton Railway Clock Tower stands at the front of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Plaza in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is 44 metres tall and built from red bricks and granite, with clocks on all four sides.

Background: The Kowloon-Canton Railway Tsim Sha Tsui Station was originally constructed in 1913. Due to some equipment and installations ordered from Britain not arriving in Hong Kong on time because of World War I, the interior construction of the Tsim Sha Tsui Railway Terminus was temporarily suspended. It was not until March 28, 1916, that the Tsim Sha Tsui Railway Terminus was officially opened. The Clock Tower of the Tsim Sha Tsui Railway Terminus was completed in 1915, but due to improper project scheduling, the one-ton hour bell inside the tower was not installed until 1920 and began operation in March 1921. The Kowloon-Canton Railway Terminus was relocated to its current site in 1978, and the old Tsim Sha Tsui Station was demolished, leaving only the Clock Tower. Exit E at Tsim Sha Tsui Station on the Tsuen Wan Line or Tsim Sha Tsui East Station on the East Rail Line of the MTR (the two stations are internally connected with the same exit name), walk to Salisbury Road, turn right, take the pedestrian tunnel next to the Hong Kong YMCA to the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, then turn right towards the Clock Tower. 2. Take the Star Ferry from Central or Wan Chai to Tsim Sha Tsui. The Clock Tower is located next to the Tsim Sha Tsui Star Ferry Pier.
