Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre

The Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre is an exhibition venue under the Antiquities and Monuments Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government. It showcases thematic displays on Hong Kong’s heritage architecture, the latest archaeological findings, and more. The centre also frequently hosts thematic lectures, workshops, and guided tours to promote public awareness, especially among students, about Hong Kong’s cultural heritage.

Located at Blocks S61 and S62 of the former Whitfield Barracks in Kowloon Park, these two historic buildings were built around 1910 and served as military barracks for the British Army. In 1967, the government reclaimed this military site for recreational and cultural development. Starting in 1983, the buildings were used as a temporary site for the Hong Kong Museum of History for over a decade, until the new museum in Tsim Sha Tsui East was completed and opened in 1998. After meticulous and careful restoration, this historical military structure has been integrated with modern exhibition facilities and educational activities, taking on a completely renewed look.

Since October 2005, the Heritage Discovery Centre has been open to the public. Its main facilities include permanent exhibition halls, special exhibition halls, a lecture theatre, activity rooms, and a reference library. Free Wi-Fi service has been available in the centre for visitors since August 2007.
