Populus Euphratica Forests

Due to the influence of the northern Taklamakan Desert and the inland arid desert climate conditions of Qiemo County, the ecological environment here is unique. The elevation within the county gradually drops from over 3,000 meters in the south to below 1,100 meters in the north, resulting in significant ecological variations across different areas. Around 1,200 meters above sea level, along the middle and lower reaches of the Qarqan River, Kalimaran River, and Moleche River, vast stretches of Populus Euphratica forests and tamarisk woodlands are distributed across riverbanks and wastelands. These ancient and hardy forests, once together with the Qarqan River, served as guardians of Qiemo. Nowadays, due to wind and sand erosion, some forested areas have been surrounded by sand dunes. The Populus Euphratica tree is said to “stand alive for a thousand years, remain upright after death for a thousand years, and not decay for another thousand years once fallen.” Walking into these ancient and majestic Populus Euphratica forests, each lush, withered, upright, or fallen tree exudes an ancient mystery.

The Qiemo County Populus Euphratica Ethnic Culture Park is located seven kilometers from the county town, nestled along the picturesque Qarqan River. It is a uniquely styled Uyghur-style estate. The park features 150 acres of uniquely shaped Populus Euphratica trees, towering and exceptionally beautiful. Through the golden leaves, you can see milky-white Mongolian-style and pagoda-style cabins, as well as Uyghur-style residences, scattered in an enchanting, idyllic layout. Entering from National Highway 315, the first thing that catches your eye is an exquisitely decorated ethnic-style gate. To the left of the gate lies a crystal-clear water recreation area, and looking up, you can see the boundless Taklamakan Desert. Further inside, Mongolian yurts, Western restaurants, grape trellises, children's play areas, and fountains are dotted along the walking paths. Here, you can enjoy authentic Uyghur cuisine such as pilaf, laghman noodles, thin-skinned buns, and deliciously fragrant yet not greasy roasted whole lamb. You can also appreciate the Uyghur “Meshrep” performance.
