Located in the northwest of the Qiangtang Plateau on the northern slope of the Kunlun Mountains, at an altitude of 4,700 meters, this area features complex terrain and unique landforms. It is a desolate expanse spanning hundreds of square kilometers, displaying a pristine mountainous and plateau landscape. The region has retained its original natural ecology in its entirety, with its peculiar karst landforms inspiring awe at the majestic wilderness that nature has preserved. When walking across the plateau, it is hard to put the scenery into words. You can only perceive its solemnity, tranquility, and profundity with your heart, experiencing the ever-changing beauty and millennia of silence bestowed by nature. Here is data provided by scientific survey teams: in the Qiangtang grassland no-man’s-land, there is less than one person per square kilometer on average. Therefore, you can easily imagine that most of the time, there are dozens or even hundreds of kilometers without any human presence. Calling it a “no-man’s-land” doesn’t mean it is absolutely uninhabited—just that the population is extremely sparse. The area includes parts of northern Nagqu, eastern Ngari, and even vast regions around the sources of the Yangtze and Yellow Rivers. Due to its highly unique geographical location and natural conditions, many places here have no official names, and people are not divided by wealth or status. For many years, the no-man’s-land has been a “free world” beyond direct government jurisdiction, where the few inhabitants enjoy a sense of “freedom and equality” that outsiders can hardly comprehend.
