Milk Sea

Starting from the Luorong Ranch and climbing uphill for about 500 meters in elevation, after passing through a cluster of prayer flags and ascending onto a large grassland, you will see the azure Milk Sea lying quietly beneath the glacier of Mount Yangmai Yong. The lakeshore is adorned with pristine white sandy beaches, and the scenery is so—so enchanting.

The Milk Sea, known in Tibetan as “Wure Co” and “O’rong Co,” is an ancient glacial lake shaped like a teardrop, covering an area of 0.5 hectares. It is surrounded by snow-capped mountains, with crystal-clear blue waters. Above it lies a vast expanse of glaciers. Legend has it that the Milk Sea is a sacred lake capable of curing deaf-muteness and other strange illnesses.

For travelers with good physical stamina, if you can cross the Milk Sea and continue climbing to the saddle between Mount Yangmai Yong and Mount Xianuoduoji and look back at the path you’ve taken, you will surely be amazed by the magnificent landscape that unfolds before your eyes. Standing here and looking back at the three sacred mountains, they appear within arm’s reach, surrounded by barren gravel and shrouded in mist, desolate as if on another planet.

Transportation

No horses or mules are allowed beyond the Luorong Ranch. Therefore, to see the Milk Sea, you must hike in. The round-trip hike from the Luorong Ranch to the Milk Sea takes approximately 5 hours.
