Mount Xiannairi is the highest among the three peaks of Yading and the fifth tallest mountain in Sichuan, standing at an elevation of 6,032 meters. Majestic and towering, it pierces the sky.

Xiannairi means "Avalokiteshvara" and is the northern peak of the "Three Protectors" snow mountains, ranking second in Buddhist hierarchy. The peak of Xiannairi tilts 10 degrees to the north and faces the Big Dipper to the west (both Buddhism and Taoism regard the Big Dipper as an auspicious star). The entire snow mountain features a circular cirque with a downward slope, so when viewed from either side, the peak always appears to face us.

Mount Xiannairi exudes an air of nobility. Its summit is covered with perennial snow, and its shape resembles a colossal Buddha leaning back gracefully, sitting upright on a lotus throne. In its embrace lies a giant Buddhist stupa, which glows brilliantly under the sunlight.

Tip: Pearl Lake at the foot of the mountain is said to be the fairy’s makeup mirror and offers the best viewpoint to admire Mount Xiannairi.

Religious Legend

In front of her is the mountain of Vajra Yogini, the pyramid-like snow peak to her right is White Tara, and the Green Tara to her right flutters with countless prayer flags. The forest of ice spires represents numerous Melodious Goddesses, who play heavenly music that resonates all the way to the Karma Hell Valley behind Mount Xiannairi. This allows the sinners in hell to hear the divine melodies, easing their suffering and gently guiding them toward repentance, so they may soon transcend their misery.

Transportation

It is the closest sacred mountain to the entrance of the scenic area and can be seen from afar at Chonggu Temple. However, to get a closer view, you’ll need to ride a horse in, or those with good stamina may try hiking.
