Yangmai Yong, in Tibetan, means "Manjushri," and it is the southern peak of the "Three Protectors" snow mountains, standing at an elevation of 5,958 meters. It ranks first among the "Three Protectors" in Buddhism.

In 1928, American explorer Joseph Rock caught sight of Yangmai Yong from amid the towering mountains around Daocheng. He was captivated by its holy and noble aura, and wrote in his diary: “She (Yangmai Yong) is the most beautiful mountain I have ever seen in the world.”

Standing beneath the sacred peak of Yangmai Yong and turning your gaze backward, you will see a vast valley embraced by surrounding mountains, where forests, grasslands, and streams each occupy their own space, creating a majestic scene that resembles a fairyland on earth.

1. Cliff of Self-Sacrifice

The Cliff of Self-Sacrifice stands atop sheer cliffs, as sharp as if cut by a knife—extremely precipitous and spectacular.

Travelers and pilgrims can rest on the opposite slope of the Cliff of Self-Sacrifice, taking in the dramatic cliff formations or praying to the deities. A small stream formed by overflowing milk-white glacial water flows at the foot of the cliff.

An ancient cirque lake located on the western slope of Yangmai Yong. The lake is elongated in shape, sits at an elevation of 4,600 meters, covers an area of 7 hectares, and is the largest alpine lake in the scenic area.

The lake water is emerald green, with misty waves stretching far under the backdrop of Yangmai Yong, giving off a serene and ethereal atmosphere. The lakeside is dotted with lush green grass, blooming wildflowers, and grazing cattle and horses, offering a stunning view. Especially during the dry season, one can see the well-ordered calcium deposits at the bottom of the lake.

It’s absolutely breathtaking.

Transportation

This is the farthest point from the scenic area entrance and requires horseback riding to access. Physically fit travelers may also attempt to walk in.
