Site of the Former CPC Luocheng Baoyuan Temple Group Activity — Baoyuan Temple
Site of the Former CPC Luocheng Baoyuan Temple Group Activity — Baoyuan Temple is located in Group 2, Xinguang Village, Luocheng Town, Qianwei County.
In 1927, after the establishment of the CPC Rongxian County Committee, numerous peasant associations were formed to resist taxes and grain levies, exerting a positive influence on neighboring counties. In October 1929, Liu Yujun, Secretary of the CPC Rongxian Liujiachang Branch, and party members Li Zhixin, Zhang Qingyun, Liu Chengzhi, and Lin Xuguang successively went to Luocheng, Jinshijing, Nanyang, Zhushan, Datong, and Xingsheng in Qianwei County to secretly recruit over 200 peasant association members. They established the “Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army Qianwei Luocheng Peasant Association Branch,” with Zhi Chengxiang serving as the head of the association, Zhang Qixian as the clerk, Dan Huaiqing (the monk Huaiqing from Baoyuan Temple) managing finances and provisions, and Dai Shuxian, an active member of the association, overseeing armed activities. The association was divided into 13 groups, each consisting of 10 to 30 members, with activists such as Tang Xiaozai, Xiang Zhizhong, Shui Qifang, and Dai Huaiqing serving as group leaders. In March 1930, through the introduction of Liu Yujun and Lin Xuguang, Xiang Chengxiang, Zhang Qixian, and Dan Huaiqing joined the Party, establishing the first CPC group in Qianwei County — the Luocheng Baoyuan Temple CPC Group. Xiang Chengxiang served as the leader, and the group was directly under the leadership of the CPC Rongxian Liujia Branch. After its establishment, the group used Baoyuan Temple as a liaison station to actively expand and strengthen the peasant association organization, mobilizing impoverished peasants to carry out various activities and coordinate with the “Autumn Harvest Uprising” in Rongxian. In the first half of 1930, CPC members from Rongxian, including Huang Dakai, Liu Yujun, Lin Xuguang, Yu Bochuan, Zhang Qingyun, Li Zixin, and Liu Chengyi, successively traveled to Luocheng Baoyuan Temple, Changgengshan, Erlongyan, and Conglinshan to hold secret meetings. They propagated Marxism-Leninism, explained the situation of the Chinese revolution, Party policies, and tasks, educating association members to raise their awareness, seize local armed forces’ ammunition and food supplies, arm the peasant association, and establish a Soviet regime. Due to the frequent meetings and significant influence, the activities of the peasant association drew the attention of the Kuomintang Qianwei County Government. The Luocheng Tuanbao Bureau actively organized anti-communist forces, forming 10 anti-communist squads that patrolled day and night and kept Baoyuan Temple under strict surveillance. In 1930, the failure of the “August 13th” Autumn Harvest Uprising by peasants in Rongxian led to the exposure of the Baoyuan Temple liaison station. Dan Huaiqing was arrested and escorted to Leshan, where he was executed on October 14. As he was being taken to the execution ground, Dan Huaiqing shouted “Long live the Communist Party of China!” and died a martyr’s death. In the first half of 1931, Xiang Chengxiang and Zhang Qixian were arrested and imprisoned but were later released on bail. After their release, they lost contact with the Party organization, and the Baoyuan Temple CPC Group ceased its activities.
Baoyuan Temple has been destroyed and holds no designated utilization or protection status.
