Martyr Yuan Haiyang’s Tomb is a classic red tourism attraction.

Martyr Yuan Haiyang’s Tomb is located in Renyi Village, Renyi Township, Gong County, approximately 48 kilometers from the county seat.

Yuan Haiyang (1906–1928) was born in Guixiangbang, Renyi Township (formerly part of Ningtai Township), Gong County. In 1923, he was admitted to Xuyi United Middle School in Yibin. In 1926, he served as a standing committee member of the Xuzhou Student Federation. In the autumn of the same year, he entered Yibin Zhongshan Middle School, joined the Communist Youth League, served as a committee member of the Youth League branch, and later became a member of the Communist Party of China. In October of the same year, he was recommended by the Party organization to study at the Sino-French University in Chongqing. In the spring of 1927, he was sent by the Party organization to the Central Peasant Movement Training Institute in Wuchang. When Chiang Kai-shek betrayed the revolution during the “April 12th Incident” and Xia Douyin’s forces attacked Wuhan, he participated in the defense of Wuhan as part of the Independent Second Regiment, Third Battalion of the Student Army. In August, he returned to his hometown, Gong County, where he established the Gong County Xiaochang Branch of the CPC and served as its secretary. He used the “Five Sons Society” to develop peasant associations. In the spring of 1928, the Gong County Special Branch of the CPC was established, and he was reappointed as its secretary. In April of the same year, the Gong County Special Branch set up an executive committee, and he was appointed as the head of the Military Affairs Commission. He directed revolutionary activities across Gong County, Changning, and Xingwen, and was responsible for the work of the CPC and peasant associations in Gong and Xingwen. Later, together with his elder brother Yuan Tingyang, who served as the captain of the Xiaochang Winter Defense Team, he led over 40 peasant association members in training at Yicunba, acquiring four rifles and organizing a peasant armed force of dozens of people, planning to launch an uprising. However, due to leaked intelligence, he was arrested by local authorities in September of the same year. On October 29, he was executed at the Yizhongdi cemetery outside the southern gate of Gong County.

After the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Gong County People’s Government built Martyr Yuan Haiyang’s Tomb. The tomb covers an area of 270 square meters and consists of six parts: the memorial garden, the main tomb, the tombstone, a biography plaque, a fence, and steps leading up to the garden. The memorial garden is paved with bluestone slabs, the main tomb is surfaced with granite, and the tombstone and biography plaque are carved with inscriptions on bluestone and marble, surrounded by a carved bluestone fence. Trees and flowers are planted around the tomb site, giving the entire memorial garden a solemn and respectful atmosphere. In 1983, it was designated as a county-level cultural relics protection unit by the Gong County People’s Government.

Renyi Township: In 2019, Renyi Township and Hengfeng Township were abolished, and their administrative areas were incorporated into Xia’er Town, which is now governed from its government office at No. 1 Zhongxin Street.

Renyi Township is located in the southwestern part of Gong County, about 43 kilometers from the county seat. It borders Didong Town to the east, Baoping Township to the south, Xia’er Town to the west, and Hengfeng Township and Gongquan Town to the north. The township covers an area of 38.3 square kilometers and administers 13 administrative villages and 65 villager groups.
