Mao County Jiuding Mountain

The Jiuding Mountain Scenic Area is situated at the junction of Mianzhu and Shifang in Deyang and Mao County in the Aba Prefecture, in the central part of the Longmen Mountain Range of the Minshan Mountain System. As the foremost peak cluster of the Longmen Mountains, its highest peak, Lion King Peak, stands at 4,989 meters above sea level. Its distinctive landscape combines grasslands, snow mountains, primeval forests, and natural wonders such as Buddhist halos, mirages, and sea of clouds, along with geological and celestial phenomena. The area is home to rare animal species such as giant pandas and golden monkeys, and boasts precious relict plant species including dove trees, yews, ginkgoes, and metasequoias, all of which add boundless vitality and charm to the scenic zone. On January 6, 1999, it was approved by the Sichuan Provincial People’s Government as a provincial-level nature reserve primarily aimed at protecting the giant panda and its biodiversity. In 2001, it was shortlisted among China’s first batch of 11 national geoparks. At the same time, it has been included in the national plan as part of the “Minshan Mountain Range World Natural Heritage Conservation Area.”

Location: The Jiuding Mountain Scenic Area is located at the boundary between Mianzhu and Shifang in Deyang and Mao County in the Aba Prefecture, in the middle section of the Longmen Mountain Range of the Minshan Mountain System, and towers as the highest peak cluster in the range, with its summit, Lion King Peak, reaching 4,989 meters above sea level.

Resource Features: Jiuding Mountain uniquely integrates natural landscapes with extraordinary geological formations. In addition, it features notable thrust fault structures and abundant paleontological fossils—especially sponge and coral reef formations dating back 200 to 400 million years—giving it high scientific and geological sightseeing value.
