Mao County is home to the largest Qiang ethnic community in China and serves as the core area of the Qiang Cultural Ecology Experimental Zone. The "5.12" Wenchuan Earthquake caused severe damage to the Mao County Qiang Ethnic Museum. With the care and strong support of the Party Central Committee and the State Council, and the generous assistance of people across the nation and from Shanxi Province, the new Mao County Qiang Ethnic Museum was officially completed and opened on May 12, 2012. It spans a land area of 60 acres, with a total construction area of 10,653 square meters and an exhibition area of 4,229 square meters.

The Mao County Qiang Ethnic Museum houses nearly ten thousand precious cultural relics. Eight exhibition halls — the Nature Hall, Earthquake Hall, Belief Hall, Origins of the Qiang Hall, Folk Customs Hall, Treasures Hall, Yingpanshan Hall, and Red Army Hall — showcase the historical landscape and cultural heritage of the Qiang region, reflecting the enduring spirit of the Qiang people. Serving as a base for patriotic education, academic research, and Qiang cultural studies, the museum presents history and heritage in a renewed form. It functions as an integrated service platform for collection, preservation, exhibition, and research, and stands as an important window for promoting Qiang culture and a spiritual haven for safeguarding cultural roots.
