Peacock Cave

Peacock Cave is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

Located near Shuanglong Street, about 55 kilometers south of Leyang Town in Anyue County, on Peacock Mountain. Originally, there was a Qing Dynasty temple here, but now only parts of the buildings remain.

Behind the temple, 10 niches of Buddha statues of various sizes were carved into the rock face, with over 70 cliff carvings still in existence. Among them, the Song Dynasty niche of the Peacock King Bodhisattva is 4.7 meters high, 4.3 meters wide, and 2.7 meters deep. At the center is a three-dimensional full-body carving of a peacock, 2.3 meters tall, with full, lifelike plumage. The peacock carries an eight-petal lotus on its back, upon which sits the Peacock King Bodhisattva. The deity wears a precious crown, a white silk robe, holds an open lotus in the left hand and peacock feathers in the right. The carving is exquisitely detailed and graceful. On either side of the arms are two sets of narrative reliefs from the Peacock King Sutra. On the upper sides of the main wall are carvings of ten worshippers, all with delicate features and serene expressions, their hands pressed together in devout prayer. The entire niche cave features ingenious design, balanced composition, and masterful craftsmanship.

Halfway up the mountain behind the cave lies the site of the Tang Dynasty "Baoguo Temple," which includes a revolving sutra storage tower built in 1570 AD. The tower is inscribed with the names of 144 Buddhist scriptures, making it an extremely valuable cultural relic.
