Anyue Confucius Temple

Anyue Confucius Temple is a cultural heritage site protected by Sichuan Province.

Anyue Confucius Temple, located at the foot of Longquan Mountain and facing south, features a four-courtyard layout and is an important ancient architectural complex within Zizhu Park in Anyue County. In the ninth year of the Jiaqing reign (1804), county magistrate Liu Youyi initiated renovations to the original layout, constructing structures such as the Dacheng Hall, Chongsheng Shrine, east and west corridors, Ji Gate, Lingxing Gate, Ink Bridge, shrines dedicated to local worthies, eminent officials, loyal and righteous figures, and chaste and filial paragons, as well as the Ten-Thousand-Ren High Palace Wall, covering a total area of approximately seventy thousand square meters. The complex is grand in scale, with a sprawling and dignified layout. The Dacheng Hall is a single-eave hip-and-gable wooden structure building, fifteen meters tall, twenty meters wide, and fifteen meters deep, with raised roof ridges and upturned eaves that exude solemnity and majesty. The current roof was modified during renovations in the 1990s. On either side of the main hall stand the Bell and Drum Towers, each housing two imperial stelae inscribed with calligraphy from Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong. The entire architectural complex is proportionally integrated, with balanced layouts exemplifying the typical characteristics of ancient Ming Dynasty architecture. Inside the hall, there are six wooden plaques inscribed with honorific titles including “Model Teacher for All Ages”, “Great Synthesis of the Sage”, “Virtue Equaling Heaven’s Canopy”, “The Divine Sage Beyond Mortal Reach”, “Sage in Harmony with Time”, and “Herein Lies Culture”. The original shrine altars to Confucius, the sage, and his disciples have been destroyed. The east and west corridors along with other affiliated structures remain well-preserved.

During the Republic of China era, the Confucius Temple was occupied by warlord troops and later became the site of Anyue County’s Simplified Normal School. After liberation, it was used as a grain storage facility. In 1977, the Chongsheng Shrine was dismantled, while the two stele pavilions and triple-arched bridge outside the Ji Gate were converted into a sports court with lighting. Today, the Ten-Thousand-Ren High Palace Wall, the Stone Archway Inscribed with “Culture Flourishes”, the Lingxing Gate, and the Pan Pond still exist. Although the main structures of the temple have undergone multiple restorations, their fundamental layout remains intact. It stands as one of the few Ming Dynasty architectural complexes in the province that boasts exquisite craftsmanship and majestic presence.
