Zitong Museum

The Zitong Museum is located 30 meters east of the south gate of Qiqu Mountain Scenic Area in Zitong County. It is a thematic museum with a focus on Wenchang culture, built with an investment of over 50 million yuan from the Zitong County Party Committee and County Government. The entire museum has three floors.

The first floor, "Millennial Wenchang, Blessing the World," is the Wenchang Culture Theme Exhibition Hall, which is divided into five sections: "The Origin of the Wenchang Emperor, the Core Ideas of Wenchang Culture, the Ritual Ceremonies of the Wenchang Ancestral Temple, Wenchang Folk Activities, and the Guanghan Commandery Ruins."

The second floor, "Zilin and Tongshui Shine Through the Ages," features exhibits primarily focused on the history and culture of Zitong. Since ancient times, Zitong has been a key stronghold in northern Shu, known as the "Lock and Key of Northern Shu," serving as an important political, economic, transportation, and cultural center. The name “Zitong” comes from its location “east backed by the Zilin forest and west resting on the Tongshui River.” It lies in the northwest of the Sichuan Basin, covering an area of 1,442 square kilometers, with jurisdiction over 32 counties, one economic development zone, one scenic area, and a total population of 380,000. Zitong also boasts a long administrative history, having been established as a county as early as 285 BC (during the Qin and Han dynasties), making it over 2,300 years old—264 years earlier than the nationwide implementation of the commandery and county system after the unification of China by the Qin. This marks Zitong as one of the earliest counties in Chinese history. Located along the ancient Jinniu Road, Zitong serves as a transitional zone between flatlands and mountainous terrain. Because it “connects the passes of Qin and guards the gateway to Shu,” it has been a shield for the fertile lands of Tianfu. As a result, Zitong is home to numerous historical and cultural relics, such as Qin-Han culture, Three Kingdoms culture, Jin-Tang culture, as well as the uniquely charming and distinctive Wenchang culture and the red tourism culture of the Two Bombs City.

The third floor hosts a calligraphy and painting exhibition by teacher Li Youxing and his students.

The Zitong Museum currently houses a collection of 144 cultural relics, mainly including historical relics, folk relics, and revolutionary relics. Zitong County has 27 cultural heritage protection units. Among them, there are 3 national-level protected sites (Qiqu Mountain Grand Temple, Li Ye Que, and Wulong Thousand-Buddha Cliff Carvings); 5 provincial-level protected sites (Changqing Zhenshixiaojie General Archway, Shangqing Temple, Dengzi Mountain Stone Bridge, Shengshui Temple, and Shuangfeng Temple); 8 municipal-level protected sites, and 11 county-level protected sites.

Since opening to the public free of charge, the Zitong Museum has made full use of the first-floor "Wenchang Culture Theme Exhibition" and the second-floor "Zitong Historical and Cultural Exhibition" to showcase the long history and splendid culture of the "Hometown of Wen Chang Emperor — Beautiful Zitong." This has played a positive role in enhancing the city’s image and enriching the spiritual and cultural life of the general public, yielding excellent social impacts.
