Taiji Lake Water Conservancy Scenic Area

Taiji Lake Water Conservancy Scenic Area is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a national water conservancy scenic area.

Wusheng Taiji Lake Water Conservancy Scenic Area is located in Wusheng County, Guang'an City, and was built based on the Dongxiguan Hydropower Station project. It is a natural river and lake type water conservancy scenic area. The scenic area covers an area of 50 square kilometers, including 40 square kilometers of water area. The area features uniquely rich resources, including the Wuhe meander belt of the Jialing River within the scenic zone. The meander neck length is 38.8 kilometers, the meander amplitude zone is 3.0–7.8 kilometers, the wavelength of the meander belt is 4.8 kilometers, and the bending coefficient is 2.99. Its degree of curvature is only surpassed by the Shenandoah River in the United States and the Bandama River in Côte d'Ivoire, ranking third in the world and first in China. This forms a unique cultural trait of riverside human settlement space along the Jialing River.

Taiji Lake was formed by the damming and water storage of the Dongxiguan Hydropower Station, and is named for the Yin-Yang taiji shape created by the winding of the Jialing River. The entire scenic area spans 50 square kilometers. In recent years, Wusheng County has scientifically developed a construction plan for the scenic area, strengthened its management, and carried out orderly development and construction. Tourism facilities such as the Taiji Culture Square and Taiji Island Forest Park have been completed, providing the capacity to receive visitors. Last year, it successfully passed the provincial-level water conservancy scenic area approval. During on-site inspections at the Taiji Culture Square, Taiji Island, lakeside farmhouses along Taiji Lake Lakeside Road, the Lakeside Corridor, and Taiji Lake itself, and after viewing a special feature video of Taiji Lake and hearing the county government’s report on the site's development, the evaluation team concluded that the Taiji Lake Water Conservancy Scenic Area has excellent water resources and landscape conditions. The Wusheng County Party Committee and government place great importance on the development and construction of the scenic area and have achieved preliminary results. They hope that Wusheng will follow the creation standards, strengthen institutional setup, complete the water conservancy planning outline, create a water culture, promote water science education, and ensure the smooth progress of the creation work.

Taiji Lake is located in Liemian Town, Wusheng County, Guang'an City, Sichuan Province. The Jialing River, carrying the snows of Qin and Long, surges forward and, upon entering Wusheng County, winds around Dongguan Tuo and Xiguan Tuo, forming a Yin-Yang taiji shape. The construction of the Dongxiguan Hydropower Station, which involved damming the river and storing water, gave rise to the renowned tourist attraction—Taiji Lake.

The uniqueness of Taiji Lake lies entirely in its water. First, the surface is vast, with misty waves stretching as far as the eye can see, blending blue waters with the sky. Second, the water quality is pristine, clean, and delightful, with minimal pollution. Moreover, the shores are dotted with scenic spots, including miles of verdant pine forests; the Stone Hammer and Stone Drum, with their fascinating legends; the ruins of an ancient city from the early Han Dynasty, preserving a piece of history; and sand martins skimming over the lake in spring, bringing a splash of vitality. The majestic dam resembles a dragon lying across the waves, and the artificial ship lock seems an extraordinary feat of craftsmanship. Lion Mountain and Taiji Island are shrouded in clouds and rosy light, while Divine Child Peak is strikingly realistic. Taiji Lake is truly a premier destination for tourism and vacation.

Wusheng is situated at the junction of Sichuan and Chongqing, at the heart of the golden triangle formed by Chongqing, Dazhou, and Nanchong. It is also one of the main hubs along the golden tourism route connecting Chengdu, Nanchong, Guang'an, Chongqing, and the Yangtze River Three Gorges. National Highway 212 runs across the scenic area, and the road network is well-connected. It is 40 kilometers from Deng Xiaoping’s Former Residence, 40 kilometers from Nanchong—the hometown of Marshal Luo Ruiqing, Zhang Lan, and the author of Records of the Three Kingdoms, Chen Shou—and 60 kilometers from Hechuan’s Fishing City. It is 100 kilometers from Beibei Hot Springs and Jinyun Mountain Scenic Area, and 100 kilometers from Suining’s Lingquan Temple and Guangde Temple. Especially with the construction of the Nanhe Expressway, the distance between the scenic area and the international metropolis of Chongqing has been reduced to just 100 kilometers, reachable in just one hour. With the development of the Jialing River Golden Waterway through cascade development and channel regulation, thousand-ton ships can now travel directly from Chongqing to Taiji Lake Scenic Area.
