Birthplace of Comrade Zhang Side

The birthplace of Comrade Zhang Side is a Sichuan Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit and a classic red tourism attraction.

The former residence of Comrade Zhang Side, covering an area of 71 square meters, faces east and sits west. It consists of two bays, is 8.5 meters wide, and 5.1 meters deep, built with earth and wood structure, featuring a small blue-tiled roof with an eave height of 3.2 meters and an overall height of 4.9 meters. Zhang Side was born in 1915 on April 21st in the earthen room on the left. He joined the Young Pioneers in 1933, and in October of the same year joined the Fourth Front Army of the Red Army.

In 1935 he participated in the Long March, and in November 1936 arrived at the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region with his unit. He joined the Communist Party of China in October 1937. In 1944, he died in the line of duty while working in a coal mine. Chairman Mao Zedong attended the memorial service for Zhang Side. Chairman Mao not only personally wrote the eulogy but also delivered the famous speech “Serve the People.” For decades, the shining slogan “Serve the People,” together with the name of Zhang Side, has resounded across China.

In 2007, it was designated as a Provincial Cultural Relics Protection Unit by the People’s Government of Sichuan Province.
