Nanchong Qingquan Temple
Nanchong Qingquan Temple is a cultural tourism attraction.
Qingquan Temple is located in Wufeng Subdistrict, Shunqing District, Nanchong City, just a stone’s throw from the municipal government’s new district office building. It can be easily reached by taking Tourism Bus Route 3 or Route 15 from Wuxing Garden in the city center. The temple covers an area of 26 mu, with a construction area of 7,431 square meters. It has 30 religious personnel and receives over 500,000 visitors annually, generating nearly one million yuan in public welfare and self-sustaining income. Originally built during the Tang Dynasty, Qingquan Temple flourished in the Song Dynasty. In the second year of the Dazhong Xiangfu era (1009 AD) under Emperor Zhenzong of Song, the court bestowed upon it the title “Qingquan Monastery.” Throughout centuries of dynastic changes and wars—especially the severe damage inflicted during the Cultural Revolution—the temple fell into disrepair. In recent years, guided by the Party’s religious policies and under the leadership of municipal and district governments and religious affairs departments, Venerable Master Shengjing, director of the Qingquan Temple Management Committee and abbot, along with the temple’s monastic and lay communities, have worked diligently to benefit all beings and cultivate good karma. Without a single penny from the government, they relied on self-raised funds to rebuild and maintain the temple, constructing or renovating the Mahavira Hall, East and West Wing Rooms, Five Grain Hall, Guanyin Pavilion, Yuantong Hall, Scripture Depository, Dharma Transmission Hall, Vegetarian Restaurant, Pharmacy, and Buddha Recitation Hall. Now, the temple halls house dignified and compassionate statues of Buddhas and bodhisattvas. The buildings shine with golden splendor, while bells chime melodiously and incense smoke curls gently. Visitors come in an endless stream, making Qingquan Temple widely renowned across northeastern Sichuan and even nationally. Key halls include the Medicine Buddha Hall, Sangharama Hall, Heavenly King Hall, Mahavira Hall, Thousand-Armed Guanyin Hall, Wealth God Hall, Kṣitigarbha Hall, Arhat Hall & King Yama Hall, Dharma Transmission Hall, and Scripture Depository. Since the establishment of its second Management Committee, the leadership team headed by Master Shengjing has devoted tremendous effort to the temple’s growth and expansion. They transformed the once-dilapidated temple into a modern-scale monastic complex. Fixed assets increased from just tens of thousands to over ten million yuan. The resident monastic community grew to 30 monks, with 14 lay practitioners. The temple has achieved remarkable self-development and contributed significantly to the local economy, becoming a well-known sacred Buddhist site both within and beyond the province. At the same time, Qingquan Temple leverages its strengths to cultivate good karma, benefit all beings, and actively engage in social welfare. It donates to support education for underprivileged families, contributes to renovating dilapidated school buildings in Shunqing District, builds bridges and repairs roads for local communities, and generously donates to alleviate poverty. In times of national difficulty, the temple demonstrates its patriotism and devotion to Buddhism by supporting the government. During the 1998 floods and the devastating March 1st fire in 2003, Qingquan Temple promptly made generous donations. Over the past decade, it has contributed over two hundred thousand yuan to various charitable causes, earning praise from the Party, government, and religious followers. It has been repeatedly recognized as a “Civilized Religious Activity Site” at both municipal and district levels. Nanchong’s new municipal government district has been established in Qingquanba. The newly built government office building stands in visual harmony with Qingquan Temple. The newly constructed Binjiang Avenue and the planned urban expressway provide quick and convenient access to the temple. We believe that under the correct guidance of the Party’s religious policies and the leadership of Master Shengjing, Qingquan Temple will thrive even more. The temple warmly welcomes visitors and devotees from all over to come and explore.

It borders the Jialing River to the east, Beicheng Subdistrict Office to the south, Hua Feng Subdistrict Office to the west, and Yongxi Town and Jingxi Town to the north, covering an area of 18.9 square kilometers.
