Nanchong Martyrs' Cemetery

Nanchong Martyrs' Cemetery is a classic red tourism destination.

Nanchong Martyrs' Cemetery was established in 1994 and is located in the scenic Xishan Scenic Area. Covering an area of over 40 acres, it has been designated by the State Council and the Sichuan Provincial Government as a national and provincial key protected site for martyrs' monuments, respectively. It is also a patriotic education base in Sichuan Province and Nanchong City, a northern Sichuan patriotic education base for youth, and one of Nanchong's red tourism sites.

The cemetery currently features several memorial structures, including the Revolutionary Martyrs' Exhibition Hall, the Martyrs’ Monument, a tower-style entrance gate, a commemorative memorial archway, the Martyrs’ Cemetery, and a forest of stone tablets inscribed with calligraphy from Party and state leaders. The Revolutionary Martyrs' Exhibition Hall contains five exhibition rooms that display the life stories and related materials of 100 notable martyrs from Nanchong during the Land Revolution period, the Red Army period, the War of Resistance against Japan, the Liberation War period, and the period of socialist construction. The Martyrs’ Cemetery houses the remains of 152 martyrs.

Since its establishment, the cemetery has always adhered to the purpose of "honoring martyrs and educating the public." It embraces the philosophy of "wholehearted service, scientific management, dedication to work, and sustainable development," and promotes the spirit of hard work and pioneering. It has gradually developed into a multifunctional site for socialist spiritual civilization, integrating the commemoration of martyrs, remembrance visits, sightseeing, and leisure.

The environment within the cemetery is beautiful, with a green coverage rate of over 90%. Since its opening, it has received nearly 800,000 visitors from all walks of life who come to pay tribute to the martyrs, fully playing its role as a patriotic education base and a primary hub for socialist spiritual civilization.

In recent years, leaders at all levels have attached great importance to the construction and development of the cemetery. Officials from the Ministry of Civil Affairs, the provincial department, and the municipal Party committee and government have made multiple inspection visits to provide guidance. Leaders from the Municipal Civil Affairs Bureau have conducted several research trips to the site, resolving specific difficulties on the spot. With support from higher-level departments, in 2009, the martyrs’ memorial facilities and the cemetery environment underwent renovation, maintenance, and improvement. Currently, the appearance of the cemetery has been completely revitalized, and the standards of reception and services have reached a new level, receiving unanimous praise from visitors coming to pay tribute.

Currently, the Martyrs’ Cemetery has become an important site for Party members and cadres to learn about the history of the Party and strengthen their Party spirit; a vital ground for the general public to nurture patriotic sentiments and cultivate national spirit; and an essential classroom for youth to study revolutionary traditions and cultivate moral character.
