Former Site of the Office of the Northern Sichuan Administrative Office

The Former Site of the Office of the Northern Sichuan Administrative Office is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

The Northern Sichuan Administrative Office was a provincial-level administrative region in China that existed from 1950 to 1952, with its seat located in Nanchong City (now Shunqing District of Nanchong). It governed four prefectures: Nanchong, Suining, Daxian, and Jiange.

Historical records state that the Soviet-style building complex was completed in 1951. At that time, the office of the Northern Sichuan Administrative Office moved here from Yifeng Street. The office of Comrade [redacted], who was then Secretary of the CCP Northern Sichuan Regional Committee, Political Commissar of the Northern Sichuan Military District, and Director of the Northern Sichuan Administrative Office, was also relocated here.

Today, standing majestically behind lush pine trees, the Northern Sichuan Administrative Office Auditorium features a square exterior, axial symmetry, and a “three-part” structure. This Soviet-style auditorium-style building boasts a classic “I” shaped Soviet design with left-right symmetry. Inside, the original wooden flooring has been replaced with cement, and parts of the walls are patched and weathered, with faint traces of the original wooden structure still visible. The wooden exterior of the auditorium has been replaced with brick, and its light red base tone sets off a group of athlete sculptures at the entrance, blending the old with the new.

The Northern Sichuan Administrative Office Soviet-style building complex not only witnessed the arduous journey of development and construction led by [redacted] during his over two years of work in Nanchong, where he headed the Northern Sichuan Party Committee and Administrative Office, but also the growth of China West Normal University (CWNU) over the years. According to CWNU’s historical records, in early September 1952, after the dissolution of the Northern Sichuan Administrative Office, Sichuan Teachers College (now China West Normal University) moved in, and the administrative office building became the college’s office building. Despite several name changes over the years, the administrative office building of the Northern Sichuan Administrative Office has been preserved as part of the historical legacy.
