Former Residence of Li Jiajun

The former residence of Li Jiajun is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

The former residence of Li Jiajun is located about 400 meters south of Houping Village, Gujun Township, Jiuyuan Town, Wanquan City. It has a traditional three-section courtyard layout. Back then, Li Jiajun and his comrades frequently held secret meetings here to make all the necessary preparations for the Gujun Uprising. The current structure was rebuilt according to Li Jiajun’s original design from 1926. Covering an area of 932 square meters, the building consists of a one-story base with a second floor above, featuring a flat roof, with a total width of five bays spanning 24.5 meters and a depth of four bays spanning 18 meters. It has a total height of 6.5 meters, with the ground floor standing at 3.2 meters. The central lintel is hung with a black-lacquered, gold-plated wooden plaque inscribed with “Former Residence of Martyr Li Jiajun.” Inside the residence, there is a full-body statue of Martyr Li Jiajun, along with a brief restoration record and an exhibition room dedicated to his life and deeds. Some original pieces of furniture are also displayed in various rooms of the house. In 1987, Zhang Aiping, then State Councilor and Minister of Defense, inscribed the nameplate “Former Residence of Li Jiajun” for the memorial site.

Li Jiajun (1902–1931) was a native of Gujunba. He came from a well-off family, was intelligent from a young age, loved reading, and had progressive ideas. In 1919, he attended Suiding United Middle School. After the May Fourth Movement, he actively participated in social activities and co-founded the newspaper “Eshan Bell” with other students from Wanquan studying abroad. The publication advocated reform and criticized societal ills, leading to his expulsion from school on the grounds of “radical speech and rule violations.” In the autumn of 1922, he went to Shanghai and was admitted to Tongji Medical College.
