Guanyin Gorge is located in Wanyuan City, Sichuan Province, about 5 kilometers from the city center, covering a total area of 25 square kilometers. It borders Shaanxi to the north and Chongqing to the south. The crystal-clear river flows through the canyons of Guanyin Gorge, winding and twisting with graceful beauty. On a hot summer day, the cool river is a gift from nature. Strolling along the riverbank or splashing in the clear waves instantly brings a refreshing chill, driving away the summer heat. The constant flow of water has polished the riverbed’s pebbles of all sizes, leaving them smooth and clean as jade. Being here feels like stepping into a paradise. On the riverbank, you can immerse yourself in the feeling of merging with nature. The Buddhist zen idea of “originally there is not a single thing, where could dust alight?” becomes truly palpable.

Looking up at the towering peaks on either side, their awe-inspiring majesty enhances the deep and mysterious aura of Guanyin Gorge. A cliff face seems to leap out toward you, its exposed reddish-yellow rocks resembling the bronze skin of a sturdy man. In this moment, the raw power makes you feel the ruggedness of Guanyin Gorge. On the cliff, remnants of an ancient plank road are faintly visible. The shouts of merchants traveling along the plank road seem to echo from just yesterday, lingering in the air. A sense of historical desolation and weightiness adds to the ancient, timeless atmosphere of the gorge. Today, the ancient plank road has become history, replaced by a modern road that cuts through mountains and valleys in the canyon. Amidst cliffs resembling a tiger’s mouth, cars now drive through. What once were plank roads along the cliffs have given way to modern roads, making the journey through Shu no longer difficult.

Across the river stands a sheer mountain peak that rises straight from the riverbed to the clouds. A naturally formed rock formation resembling a seated Guanyin comes into view. From afar, the Goddess of Mercy appears serene, peaceful, and dignified. Legend has it that many years ago, a heavily pregnant woman felt intense abdominal pain while crossing the gorge, realizing she was about to give birth. She knelt three times facing the Guanyin figure, praying for the safety of mother and child. Miraculously, the pain ceased, and she fell into a deep sleep. When she awoke, she found herself back in her own bed, cradling a healthy baby boy. To express gratitude for Guanyin’s compassion, people built a temple near the rock figure. Though it eventually fell into disrepair and disappeared over time, remnants of its stone foundations can still be seen. This is also how Guanyin Gorge got its name.

The wonders of nature don’t end there. A rock formation resembling a sleeping elder is equally astounding. From a distance, a kindly old man appears to be lying peacefully on the mountainside. His nose, eyes, forehead, and mouth are vividly lifelike. In a tranquil posture with a gentle smile, the formation leaves you marveling at nature’s incredible artistry.

Within Guanyin Gorge, mountains stand densely packed, truly embodying the poetic line “viewed horizontally, a range; viewed vertically, a peak; far or near, high or low, each is different.” The miraculous craftsmanship of nature has created more than ten natural attractions, including the “Pillar Piercing the Sky,” “Ancient Plank Road,” “Monkey Cave,” “Camel Peak,” and “Tang Monk Figure.” These formations are naturally shaped, each unique and distinct.
