Introduction to Fushun West Lake in Zigong

Fushun West Lake is located in the northwest corner of the county town. It is a naturally formed lake that has been artificially enhanced, larger in the south and smaller in the north, shaped like a horizontally placed gourd, and is famous for its lotus flowers. The lake was originally a natural depression where rainwater from Zhongxiu, Shen Gui, Wufu, and Agate mountains converged. As early as the Song Dynasty, it was dredged, stone embankments were built, and it became a lake, “with a width of six to seven li.” Through renovations and adornments over the dynasties, structures such as the “West Lake Hall, Lake View Pavilion, Lingbo Pavilion, Scented Breeze Pavilion, Spring Breeze Pavilion, Awakening Heart Pavilion, Huanle Pavilion, Jinglian Pavilion, Haoran Terrace, and Transcendent Terrace” were successively built. The lake stretches out gracefully, with pavilions and terraces in harmony, curved bridges connecting them, lotus flowers reflecting the sunlight, lotus leaves stretching to the sky, and willows lining the shores. The painted pleasure boats on the lake, modeled after those of Hangzhou’s West Lake, can be used to host banquets for esteemed guests. Especially the small boats and pleasure crafts drifting on the lake have left behind many interesting anecdotes and stories from ancient times.
