Former Residence of Liu Guangdi

The Former Residence of Liu Guangdi is a cultural relic protection unit of Sichuan Province.

The Exhibition Hall of Liu Guangdi’s Former Residence is located in Zhaohua Ancient Town. Built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty, it features a wooden structure with a gable-and-hip roof, post-and-lintel construction, bamboo-woven walls, and a small blue tile roof. It has wooden plank doors and walls, a width of one bay, and a depth of 22.1 meters. The beams and frames are well-preserved, and parts of the window lattice, 0, and skirt board remain inside. The building covers an area of 89.5 square meters, representing a typical architectural style of southern Sichuan. It holds high historical, cultural, scientific value as well as significant commemorative importance.

Liu Guangdi (1859–1898), styled Peicun, was a native of Fushun County, Zigong City, Sichuan Province. He was one of the “Six Gentlemen of the Hundred Days’ Reform” and a renowned patriotic poet among the late Qing reformists.

His ancestral home was in Wuping County, Fujian Province. A member of the Hakka ethnic group, he was born in Zhaohua, Fushun, Sichuan, as the seventh-generation descendant of Hakka migrants who moved to Sichuan during the early Qing Dynasty under the Huguang Filling Sichuan policy. Coming from a poor family, he studied diligently and ranked 88th among the second-class (Jinshi) degree holders in the 1883 imperial examination (Guimao Year), subsequently being appointed as a reserve official in the Ministry of Punishments.
