Miaogaoshan Cliff Carvings

The Miaogaoshan Cliff Carvings are a cultural relic protection unit of Chongqing Municipality.

Located in Shuguang Village, Jijia Town, 22 kilometers west of the county. The Miaogao Temple stands on the mountain, within which there is a stone pagoda of Master Zuguantong and the now-destroyed "Poetry Stele of the Loyalty Hall" by Feng Yi. Beneath the rocky cliffs outside the temple, there are two grottoes with carvings, known as the Buddha Cave and the Maomao Rock, totaling 12 caves. In the second cave, the "Three Teachings" Grotto, Sakyamuni Buddha is seated on a lotus pedestal, with coiled dragons carved beneath him. On either side are disciples Kasyapa and Ananda, representing Buddhist figures. On the left wall is a seated figure clad in wide-sleeved robes, wearing boots, with a beard, holding a weapon, accompanied by two attendants—these are Daoist figures. On the right wall is a seated figure with a round topknot, wearing large sleeves and a crown with flowing ribbons, holding a scepter, with an attendant on each side—these represent Confucian figures. This classic "Three Teachings" cave is rare in Dazu and even more precious nationally.
