Cliff Carvings at Shuchengyan

The cliff carvings at Shuchengyan are a Chongqing Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Unit.

The cliff carvings at Shuchengyan are located in Dawu Village, Zhong’ao Town, Dazu County, and date back to the Song Dynasty.

The cliff carvings at Shuchengyan are rare Taoist stone sculptures preserved in the Dazu area. Taking the No. 3 Cave, the Ziwu Great Emperor Cave, as an example, it was carved during the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty (1131–1163). The central wall of the cave features the Ziwu Great Emperor, seated facing west on a double-headed dragon throne, with a seated height of 1.30 meters and a shoulder width of 0.40 meters. On either side of the main figure stand two warrior deities, each 1.45 meters tall, both wearing golden hair buns tied with cords around their necks, clad in armor, and with fierce, glaring expressions.

In 2000, the cliff carvings at Shuchengyan were listed in the first batch of Chongqing Municipal Cultural Relics Protection Units by the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government.
