Chiang Kai-shek’s Former Residence

Chiang Kai-shek’s Former Residence, also known as the President’s Residence, is located in the Baoshi Xiaquan Villa Area, Xiaquan, Nanquan Subdistrict, Banan District, Chongqing. Facing north and situated on a southward plot, it covers a land area of 298 square meters, with a built-up area of 272 square meters and an overall height of 7.4 meters. The building features a fusion of Chinese and Western architectural styles, comprising 12 variously sized rooms and halls, and is constructed with reinforced concrete (originally with a wooden stud-wall structure), featuring a single-eave hip-and-gable roof covered with small grey tiles and two dormer windows on the roof. Originally the residence of the Ruan family during the late Qing Dynasty, in 1940 the site was renovated into the President’s Residence. Secret meetings and receptions held by Chiang Kai-shek all took place here. The Third Office of the Generalissimo’s Headquarters Staff was also stationed here. This building served as one of the main residences of Chiang Kai-shek, President of the Nationalist Government, in Chongqing. Its architecture and surrounding environment have been relatively well preserved, making it an important historical site from the War of Resistance with high heritage value.

Chiang Kai-shek (October 31, 1887 – April 5, 1975), whose given name was Zhongzheng and courtesy name Jieshi. His childhood name was Ruiyuan, his lineage name ZhouTai, and his school name Zhiqing. Of ancestral origin in Yixing, Jiangsu, he was born in Fenghua, Zhejiang. He was a renowned political figure and military leader in modern China, having served as President of the Whampoa Military Academy, Commander-in-Chief of the National Revolutionary Army, Chairman of the National Government, President of the Executive Yuan, Chairman of the Military Affairs Commission of the National Government, Generalissimo of the Republic of China, Director-General of the Kuomintang, Leader of the Three People's Principles Youth League, Supreme Commander of the China Theater of the Allied Forces during World War II, and President of the Republic of China, among other positions.

Nanquan Subdistrict: Nanquan Town was formed in July 2001 through the merger of the former Nanquan Town and Lujiao Town. It is located in the suburbs near the main urban area of Chongqing and belongs to the eastern new town construction cluster. Both the Chongqing–Qianjiang Expressway and the Shangjie Expressway run through the area. It lies 18 kilometers from the city center and 32 kilometers from Jiangbei Airport.
