Zhujia Courtyard in Banan

The Zhujia Courtyard in Banan is a cultural heritage conservation unit of Chongqing Municipality.

The Zhujia Courtyard is located within the former Shigang Farm in Shigang Community, Nanpeng Town (now Nanpeng Subdistrict), Banan District. It features a multi-story courtyard house structure, facing south with a north orientation. Along the central axis, it comprises an upper, middle, and lower hall, along with two quadrangle courtyards on either side, covering a construction area of 3,009.6 square meters and a site area of 4,044.84 square meters.

The Zhu family were originally major local landowners. Due to various historical changes, most descendants of the Zhu family have settled elsewhere. According to recollections by Master Huang, whose family descended from a worker of the original Zhu household, this residence was first built in the late Qing Dynasty. It was funded by silver provided by the Zhu family matriarch’s sister, who ran a business in the city, and the construction materials were carried on foot and shoulder-poled all the way to the Zhu estate. Over time, it underwent repairs and expansions by the Zhu brothers and subsequent generations until it was finally completed during the Republican era. After the liberation, when the Shigang Farm headquarters moved in, some partial modifications were made to the original architectural complex of the Zhujia Courtyard. However, the overall layout and main structures remained largely intact, preserving the architectural style of the late Qing and early Republican periods.
