Former Residence and Tomb of Yang Cangbai

The former residence and tomb of Yang Cangbai are protected as a municipal cultural relic site in Chongqing.

The former residence and tomb of Yang Cangbai are located in Mudong Town (residence), Banan District, and Dongquan Village, Dongquan Town (tomb), dating back to the Qing Dynasty (residence) and 1984 (tomb).

Yang Cangbai’s former residence is in Mudong Town, Banan, Chongqing. In 1946, to commemorate Mr. Yang Cangbai, the town was renamed Cangbai Town. After the liberation, it was renamed back to Mudong Town. Yang Cangbai (1881–1942), also known as Shukan, with the courtesy names Binxian and Tianyinge, was originally from Mudong Town, Baxian County (now Banan District, Chongqing). In 1903, he founded Sichuan’s first old democratic revolutionary organization, the “Gongqianghui.” In 1906, the organization was restructured as the “Chongqing Branch of the Tongmenghui,” with Yang Cangbai serving as its leader. In 1911, he led efforts to overthrow the Qing government’s authority in eastern Sichuan, establishing the “Chongqing Shu Military Government,” where he modestly served as a senior advisor. He later held key positions including Governor of Sichuan Province, Minister of Finance, Secretary-General of the Grand Marshal’s Office under the Guangzhou Government, Central Executive Committee Member and Alternate Supervisory Committee Member of the Kuomintang, Governor of Guangdong Province, and Minister of Justice under the Beijing Government. On August 6, 1942, Mr. Yang Cangbai passed away in Chongqing. On December 25, 1944, the Nationalist Government renamed Jianguo Road (PaoTai Street) at Hongya Cave to Cangbai Road in his honor.

In 2000, the former residence and tomb of Yang Cangbai were designated as part of the first batch of municipal cultural relic protection units by the Chongqing Municipal People’s Government.

It was a famous ancient town bustling with merchants and a hub for trade and product distribution during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town covers a total area of 104.3 square kilometers, with an urban built-up area of 1.5 square kilometers and a resident population of 15,000, resulting in an urbanization rate of 30%. It administers 3 communities, 28 administrative villages, and 107 villager groups, with a total population of 43,924 and cultivated land area of 44,422 mu.
