Yueling Ancient Residential Buildings are located in Yueling Village, Wenshi Town, about 30 kilometers north of Guanyang County. This village is the largest natural settlement in Guanyang County, home to around 400 households, all belonging to the Tang family, which has passed down through 28 generations without any mixed surnames. The ancient residential buildings were built during the late Ming and early Qing dynasties and are typical of the Minnan style. Among them, the Six Major Courtyards are the most intact and representative residential structures. It is said that these courtyards were built by the ancestors of the Tang family for their six sons. Each courtyard has its own grand gate tower, resplendent and magnificent, and they are successively named “Cuide Hall”, “Hongyuan Hall”, “Jimie Hall”, “Duofu Hall”, “Wenming Hall”, and “Xigou Hall”. Each courtyard consists of six buildings, all featuring a two-story structure, including living rooms, guest rooms, storage rooms, and even performance stages used for opera shows, designed in the style of official residences—spacious, uniform, and imposing. Each courtyard also includes a well, a stone mill, a grain storage, a fish pond, and a garden. The entire village and the surrounding walls and paths of each courtyard are built with stones, making it one of the most well-preserved ancient residential complexes in Guangxi.
Yueling Village boasts numerous cultural relics and historic sites, such as the Wenchang Pavilion, the Chastity Memorial Archway, the Lingyun Pagoda, the Cui Guan Pagoda, the General’s Temple, the Konglin Tomb, the Stone Watchtower, the Centenarian Pavilion, and the Buyue Pavilion. In particular, the Chastity Memorial Archway is exquisitely crafted and imposing. To guard against bandits and military chaos, Yueling Village had a highly secure defense system, with watchtowers at the entrance, surrounding walls, and fortresses within the village. The village is also a production base for red dates and pomegranates, renowned both within and outside the county for its abundant yield and high quality. Yueling Village has produced many notable individuals, with 12 successful imperial examination candidates attaining the rank of Jinshi and 23 as Juren during the imperial era. The village holds significant value for sightseeing, aesthetics, and archaeological research.
The Yueling Ancient Residential Buildings are surrounded by mountains, back against the Guan River, with lush trees and fragrant fruits and melons. The area offers numerous natural landscapes as well as a wealth of preserved cultural relics and ancient traditions. These include the autonomous region-level cultural relic protection unit, the "Filial Piety and Righteousness Can Be an Example" stone memorial archway, built between 1834 and 1839 during the Qing Dynasty’s Daoguang reign; the "Buyue Pavilion" and "Wenchang Pavilion", built during the Qianlong reign; the county-level cultural relic protection unit, the "Cui Guan Pagoda"; the "Centenarian Pavilion", built in 1909 during the Xuantong reign, reflecting local customs and folklore; as well as historic structures like the "General’s Temple", "Ancient Stone Stockade", and "Tang Konglin Tomb", and natural landscapes such as the "Buyue Immortal Bridge", "Buyue Rock", "Baiju Rock", "Shajiang Evening Ferry", "Ancient Well Spiral", "Upper Well Stone Spring", and "Shuangfa Well".
The Yueling Ancient Residential Buildings feature smooth bluestone-paved roads, grey-brick and green-tiled roofs, and six well-arranged courtyards. Elements such as ancient wells, stone mills, stages, granaries, fish ponds, and gardens form a typical representation of Qing Dynasty-era residential architecture. Historic sites built during the Qing Dynasty—including the "Filial Piety and Righteousness Can Be an Example" stone memorial archway, "Buyue Pavilion", "Wenchang Pavilion", "Baibu Pavilion", "Cui Guan Pagoda", "General’s Temple", "Stone Stockade", "Konglin Tomb", and "Ancient Well Spiral"—together create a quaint and richly atmospheric beautiful scene.
