Guanyang Wenshi Stone Forest

Guanyang Wenshi Stone Forest is located 30 kilometers north of Guanyang County and traversed by Provincial Highway 20164 (Guilin to Lingling). Formed through typical karst lava erosion, the stone forest spans five square kilometers and features an array of uniquely shaped rocks. It boasts a double-layered structure, sword-like peaks, steep cliffs, and extraordinary formations. Attractions such as “Flying Horse Soaring in the Sky,” “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea,” “Eagle Spreading Its Wings,”

and “Immortal Herding Deer” are incredibly lifelike. It can be compared to — and is even more representative than — the stone forests of Lunan in Yunnan, featuring classic sword-like karst landforms.

The Wenshi Stone Forest is located 30 kilometers north of Guanyang County. Formed from typical karst rock erosion, it covers an area of five square kilometers and features a dense collection of uniquely shaped rocks. It has a double-layered structure, sword-like peaks, and other distinctive formations. Attractions such as “Flying Horse Soaring in the Sky,” “Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea,” “Eagle Spreading Its Wings,” and “Immortal Herding Deer” are incredibly lifelike. It is comparable to — and even more typical than — the stone forests of Lunan in Yunnan.

Beneath the stone forest, lush camphor and banyan trees thrive, while red maples and green willows complement each other. Ancient wells and clear springs, small bridges over flowing streams, birdsong, and floral scents create a serene atmosphere. According to Dr. Jiang Zhongcheng, a karstology expert who studied the Wenshi Stone Forest, it has two notable characteristics: first, it represents a more typical sword-like karst landform than that of Lunan in Yunnan. Due to Guilin’s superior climatic conditions compared to Lunan, the sword-like karst formations here are more typical and widespread. Second, it has a more complex developmental history than sword-like karst landscapes found in other tropical regions around the world.

The Wenshi Stone Forest also features a double-layered structure, sword-like peaks, and uniquely shaped formations. Initial development work on the site is underway, with the first phase of walking trails largely completed and some visitors already arriving to explore and admire the scenery. The development and utilization of the Wenshi Stone Forest will fill the gap of having no stone forest within the Guilin tourism circle.
