Former Residence of Tang Jing-song

The former residence of Tang Jing-song is a national AAA-level tourist attraction and a cultural heritage site protected by Guanyang County.

The former residence of Tang Jing-song is situated in Jiangkou Village, Xinjie Township, about 1 kilometer from the local government office. It was the home of Tang Jing-song, one of the “Three Brothers as Hanlin Scholars” from Guanyang in the Qing Dynasty. Constructed during the Kangxi era of the Qing Dynasty, the residence spans 410 square meters and follows a brick-and-timber post-and-lintel architectural style. It features grey-blue tiles and bluish-grey walls, and is divided into upper and lower buildings, with sections such as a front courtyard, main hall, wing rooms, and a central courtyard. The beams, crossbeams, and lintels are all carved with figures, dragons, phoenixes, flowers, plants, insects, and fish. Both side walls are coated in bluish-grey plaster, and the gable ends are decorated with motifs such as double dragons and the Taiji eight-trigram symbol. The building is grand in scale and exquisitely crafted, making it the only well-preserved historical residence of a notable figure in our county. On December 17, 2002, it was designated as a county-level cultural heritage site.

Tang Jing-song (January 8, 1842 – March 2, 1903), courtesy name Weiqing, was a native of Jiangkou Village.

From a young age, he was generous and ambitious, diligent in his studies, and exceptionally talented. In the Bingchen year of the Xianfeng reign (1856), at the age of 14, he took the annual prefectural examination and ranked first in the top tier. In the Xinyou year (1861), at 19, he passed the provincial examination as the top scholar (Jieyuan). In the Yichou year of the Tongzhi reign (1865), at 23, he succeeded in both the metropolitan and palace examinations, earning the title of Jinshi (presented scholar). He was appointed a Hanlin academician and selected to join the Hanlin Academy as a Shujishi (probationary scholar). After three years of study at the Shuchang Hall, he was appointed as an official in the Ministry of Personnel.
