The Former Site of the New Weir Blocking Battle in the Guanyang Section of the Battle of the Xiang River is a classic red tourism attraction.

Main Battlefield of the New Weir Blocking Battle On November 26, 1934, the Red Third Army Corps ordered the Red Fifth Division to rush to New Weir overnight to block two divisions of the Guangxi Army’s 15th Army and one regiment of the 7th Army approaching from the Guanyang direction, in order to secure the left flank of the entire Red Army and cover the passage of the main force across the Xiang River.

The commander of the Red Fifth Division, Li Tianyou, and the political commissar, Zhong Chibing, led all officers and soldiers of the division to set up blocking positions near Shuikou Mountain, Fengshu Foot, and Banqiao Pu around Yangliu Well. The Red 15th Regiment held the left side of the road (toward Guanyang County town), occupying Zhongshan, Daluo Mountain, Tanfu, and Dingfu, while the Red 14th Regiment was stationed on the right along Xiashangping, Panguan Mountain, Dakuang Mountain, and Ma’an Mountain. The division command post was located on the hillside to the left of Yangliu Well; the Red Star Artillery Battalion’s command post was set up on a nearby hill, the field hospital was stationed in Xiali’an Village, and the logistics department was based in Shangli’an Village.

The New Weir Blocking Battle was one of the most grueling and tragic battles of the Battle of the Xiang River, lasting three full days and nights. It is evident that this battle was crucial to the survival of the Red Army and had significant strategic importance for the Central Red Army’s crossing of the Xiang River.
