El Salvador Transportation Guide: Airport Transfers, Local Transport, and Private Car Options
Getting from El Salvador International Airport to the city, plus long-distance intercity and coastal private transfers — all your travel options explained.
Arrival and Getting into Town
The main gateway to El Salvador is Oscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL), located about 40 km southeast of the capital. There are two common ways to get into town: authorized airport taxis, which have fixed but relatively high prices and are suitable for groups; or airport buses to a central bus terminal, then transferring to other transport — a cheaper option but time-consuming and inconvenient with lots of luggage. Most travelers opt to pre-book a hotel shuttle or private transfer.
Local Transport
- Bus (Autobús): Many routes and low fares, but varying vehicle conditions and crowding levels. Not especially tourist-friendly, so watch your belongings.
- Taxis and Ride-Hailing Apps: You can flag down a taxi on the street or book by phone. Ride-hailing apps with review systems are recommended for more transparent pricing.
- Walking: The historic center and colonial towns are walkable, but avoid secluded streets. At night, stick to short taxi rides.
Between Cities
- San Salvador – Santa Ana: Around 1.5 hours by car, available via intercity bus or private transfer.
- Towns along the Flower Route: Distances are short, but bus schedules are infrequent. Renting a car or joining a day tour is more efficient.
- San Salvador – La Libertad/Surf Coast: About 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- To Maya ruins: Most require a private transfer via Santa Ana or the capital, as public transport involves multiple transfers.
Driving and Tips
- To drive, you’ll need a valid license and must follow local regulations. Mountain roads have many curves and can be slippery in the rainy season; daytime driving is advised.
- For longer journeys, choose reputable tourist buses or hotel-arranged shuttles for better safety and comfort.
- Mobile navigation works in cities, but signals may be spotty in the mountains. Download offline maps in advance.
- Roads between the airport and the city center can get congested during peak hours. Allow at least 3 hours before a flight to reach the airport.
- Intercity buses come in standard and tourist classes. For heavy luggage or overnight trips, choose tourist-class buses or private transfers.
