Slovenia’s attractions are concentrated, so this short trip is divided into two main zones: spend the first two days in the capital, Ljubljana, with a side trip to the Karst region, then stay two nights by Lake Bled to focus on its lake-and-mountain scenery, avoiding frequent hotel changes.
Start at Triple Bridge after arrival: shop for fresh produce and dried goods at the Central Market → see the bronze winged dragon at Dragon Bridge → take the funicular or hike up to Ljubljana Castle to visit its towers and open-air cinema → walk down past the riverside book stalls and the Iron Bridge (also called Butcher’s Bridge) → dine at an old-town tavern paired with Teran red wine.
Take a train or bus (about 1 hour) to Postojna and join a guided cave tour (includes the cave train section, total about 1.5 hours). In the afternoon, add a visit to Predjama Castle, then return to the capital in the evening. If underground sights aren’t your thing, consider a half-day alternative like Celje Castle or the Old Vine House in Maribor.
Take an early bus (about 1 hour) to Bled. Store your luggage and stroll along the lakeside path. Take a pletna wooden boat to the island church of the Assumption in the middle of the lake. In the afternoon, climb up to Bled Castle to try the famous Bled cream cake. Check into a lakeside guesthouse in the evening.
Early in the morning, head to Vintgar Gorge to walk the wooden boardwalk past waterfalls and clear pools (about 1.5 hours), then rent a boat or bike at Bohinj Lake. Depending on your return schedule, head back to Bled in the afternoon or take a direct train through the Logar Valley back to Ljubljana for departure.
If visiting in winter, replace Day 4 with a day of skiing in Kranjska Gora: take a bus from Bled (about 40 minutes) to the ski area, where you can rent gear or hire an instructor on-site. A half-day beginner lesson costs about 60–90 euros. In spring, add a visit to Škocjan Caves (a UNESCO World Heritage Site requiring a guided tour reservation) after the Postojna Cave on Day 2. Summer is suitable for the whole itinerary, but in July and August, schedule outdoor hikes in the morning—afternoon thunderstorms are common in the mountains. Check the daily weather forecast before heading out, bring rain gear, and note that most lake boat services stop before 6 pm.
