Cities in Saudi Arabia are far apart with frequent flights. Within cities, ride-hailing apps are the most convenient option, while for longer distances, consider flights, high-speed rail, or driving. This guide explains the best transportation options.

Getting Around Town

  • Ride-hailing apps: Uber and Careem are widely available in major cities, with transparent pricing and easy payment — the most recommended option.
  • Car rental and self-driving: Saudi Arabia has wide roads and low fuel prices. Self-driving is suitable for visiting AlUla and desert attractions. A valid driver’s license and an International Driving Permit are required.
  • Buses and metro: Riyadh and Jeddah are gradually expanding their public transit systems, but coverage is not yet very tourist-friendly. It’s best to combine with ride-hailing apps.

Between Cities

  • Riyadh – AlUla: Around 1.5 hours by plane.
  • AlUla – Jeddah: Around 1.5 hours by plane.
  • Jeddah – Medina – Mecca: The Haramain High-Speed Railway connects these three cities, though access to Mecca is restricted to Muslims.
  • Riyadh – Jeddah: Around 1.5 hours by plane, or about 9–10 hours by car.

Tips

  • Domestic flights in Saudi Arabia are frequent. For long-distance travel, flying is much faster than driving.
  • Women are legally allowed to drive, and car rental companies now accept female customers without restriction.
  • Gas stations are spaced far apart in desert areas. Fill up before departure and carry drinking water and a spare tire.
  • Some gas stations and shops may briefly close during prayer times. Plan accordingly.
