From the history and skyline of the capital, to the Nabatean rock tombs and desert cliffs of AlUla, to the Red Sea old town of Jeddah — a golden Saudi triangle connected by flights.
Itinerary Overview
D1-D2 Riyadh → D3-D4 AlUla → D5-D6 Jeddah → D7 Return. Domestic flights connect the three cities. It takes about 1.5 hours from Riyadh to AlUla and about 1.5 hours from AlUla to Jeddah — flying is the most time-efficient option. If you have more time, you can also drive to experience the desert highway, but some stretches are hundreds of kilometres long, so assess your stamina carefully.
D1-D2 Riyadh: Capital and Hometown of the Saudi Royal Family
- D1: Arrive in Riyadh, visit the National Museum to learn about the history of the Arabian Peninsula and Islamic civilisation; in the evening, head to the Sky Bridge at Kingdom Centre for city views and explore the nearby shopping district.
- D2: In the morning, go to Diriyah, the first capital of the Saudi royal family. This earthen-toned traditional architectural complex is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the afternoon, visit Masmak Fortress and the old souq to experience the old city’s handicrafts and spice aromas.
D3-D4 AlUla: Nabatean Rock Tombs and Desert Cliffs
- D3: Fly to AlUla and enter the Hegra (Mada’in Salih) archaeological site, home to massive rock tombs carved by the Nabateans. It is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site and requires an official guided tour to visit.
- D4: In the morning, view Elephant Rock and the old town of AlUla. In the afternoon, take a private car to desert canyons and mirrored structures for sightseeing, and watch the sunset and stars in the desert in the evening.
D5-D6 Jeddah: Gateway to the Red Sea and Old Town
- D5: Fly to Jeddah and visit Al-Balad, the old town, where coral stone buildings and wooden window balconies have been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the evening, take a stroll along the Red Sea Corniche to watch the sunset.
- D6: In the morning, visit the floating mosque by the Red Sea. In the afternoon, you can go snorkelling in the Red Sea or take a boat trip, or relax in a café in the old town.
D7 Return
In the morning, pick up some dates, Arabic coffee, and spices in Jeddah before heading to the airport for departure.
Tips
- There is a Haramain High-Speed Railway between Jeddah and Medina, which you can use to extend your trip. Mecca is open only to Muslims — non-Muslims are not allowed to enter.
- Reservation for guided tours at AlUla’s heritage sites must be made online in advance, as tickets may not be available on-site.
- For domestic flights between the three cities, check in early, as airport security and prayer times may affect transit.
Overall, this itinerary strings together Saudi Arabia’s three most well-developed tourism destinations, with smooth flight connections and a moderate pace — ideal for first-time visitors. If time allows, you can extend your trip to the Red Sea resort area after Jeddah or spend an extra day in AlUla to explore the desert and stargaze, adding more depth to your journey. Note that the distance between heritage sites and desert attractions in AlUla is considerable, so it’s best to allow flexible time and avoid overpacking your schedule.
