Based in Irkutsk, follow the route “city – northern Olkhon Island – Khuzhir village on the ice,” ideal for the blue ice season from mid-February to mid-March.
Arrive at Irkutsk Airport → City walking tour: Kirov Square, Kazan Cathedral, Savior Church, and Polish Cathedral → Try Buryat dumplings and grilled meat on 130th Street → Buy supplies for the next day’s island trip.
Take an early private car or bus via ferry to the island (in winter, drive directly on the ice road, about 4–5 hours) → Arrive at your homestay in Khuzhir village → Watch the sunset at Shaman Rock and see the first bubble ice on the lake.
Ride a local Russian off-road vehicle on the northern route: visit the blue ice caves at Cape Khoboy, explore ice cracks and sapphire-colored ice surfaces. The full trip takes about 6–7 hours, including a hot tea lunch in the field → Return to the village in the evening; clear skies may offer chances for stargazing.
Spend the morning on the southern route or take free time for photography → Head back to Irkutsk in the afternoon → Depending on your flight time, visit Central Market and Kazan Mother of God Cathedral → Depart. In summer, the same route becomes a lake cruise and grassland hike on Olkhon Island.
