Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 Days
Centered around Kraków and covering Auschwitz, Wieliczka, and Zakopane, this four-day trip captures the essence of Poland.

Ideas

Kraków serves as the travel hub of Poland. With a compact Old Town and convenient transport, it allows you to explore outlying sights by organizing them in a “northwest–southeast” sequence over separate days — no need to move hotels, saving both time and effort.

Day 1: Old Town & Wawel

In the morning, take a bus or train from the airport into the city. After storing your luggage, enter the Old Town through the Florian Gate: admire the pigeons and horse-drawn carriages at the Main Market Square, listen to the hourly trumpet call at St. Mary’s Basilica (commemorating a medieval trumpeter shot while warning the city), and browse amber and embroidery at the Cloth Hall. In the afternoon, hike up Wawel Hill: tour the Royal Castle chambers, see the Sigismund Bell and royal tombs in Wawel Cathedral, and visit the legendary Dragon’s Den sculpture. In the evening, stroll along the Vistula River and enjoy dinner in the Kazimierz district.

Day 2: Auschwitz Half-Day + Kazimierz

Take an early bus to the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. Join a guided tour to visit the iron gate and barracks of Auschwitz I, and the railway platform at Auschwitz II. Set aside a full half-day for this somber experience. Return to Kraków in the afternoon to explore the historic Old Synagogue in Kazimierz and the Schindler Factory Museum (advance reservation required). End the evening with live klezmer music at a restaurant in the Jewish Quarter.

Day 3: Wieliczka Salt Mine + Scenic Zakopane

Spend the morning on a guided tour of the Wieliczka Salt Mine (around 2.5 hours), where you’ll see the salt crystal chandeliers and bas-reliefs in St. Kinga’s Chapel. In the afternoon, take a minibus for about 2 hours to the mountain town of Zakopane. Walk along the wooden cottage street in Krupówki, take a cable car up Gubałówka Mountain for views of the Tatra peaks, and sample oscypek smoked sheep cheese. Return to Kraków in the evening or stay overnight in Zakopane.

Day 4: Wrap Up at the Market

Go for a morning run or bike ride in Planty Park → visit the historic campus of Jagiellonian University (Copernicus’s alma mater) → enjoy coffee in the Jewish Quarter → shop for souvenirs at the Main Market Square. In the evening, depart from Kraków Airport or Railway Station.

Tips

  • Both the Auschwitz guided tour and the Schindler Factory require advance booking. Complete reservations on the evening of your arrival.
  • Use the Jakdojade app to buy public transport tickets in Kraków; the Old Town is walkable.
  • If traveling to Zakopane in winter, check the cable car weather and snow conditions, as mountain roads may be closed.
  • This itinerary bases you in Kraków throughout. Choose a hotel between the Old Town and the Central Railway Station for convenience. For peak season, book one to two months in advance.
  • The four-day schedule is fairly packed, and the emotional intensity of the Auschwitz half-day may be draining — plan a relaxing riverside dinner that evening.
