D4 Gatun Locks or Panama Viejo Ruins
Spend the morning at the Gatun Locks or the Panama Viejo archaeological site (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), experiencing the Canal’s impressive three-step lock system or climbing a tower for city views. In the afternoon, shop at local markets and craft stores, and enjoy the evening atmosphere in the old town’s bar district.
D5–D6 Bocas del Toro Archipelago
- D5: Fly to Bocas Town, stay on Colon Island, and spend the afternoon snorkeling or strolling on the beach, then watch the sunset.
- D6: Join a day trip to nearby islands to see dolphins, mangroves, and Red Frog Beach, and snorkel among coral reefs. Return to the main island in the evening to rest.
D7 Return & Departure
Fly back to Panama City in the morning, use layover time to visit markets or cafes, then depart from the airport. If time allows, consider a day trip to the Boquete coffee plantations.
Tips
- For the Bocas leg, flying is recommended to save time, but flights may be affected by weather during the rainy season—plan with flexibility.
- Book Canal viewing spots and island-hopping tours in advance, as availability is limited during peak seasons.
- Temperature differences between the city and islands are minor, but the islands have stronger UV rays—pack sunscreen.
Accommodation & Budget
Panama City offers a wide range of hotels, from hostels to international chains. Stay in Casco Viejo, the financial district, or along the waterfront for convenience. Mid-range city hotels cost around $60–120 per night, while boutique options are pricier. Accommodation in Bocas and Boquete is more affordable and laid-back, but island beachfront bungalows are higher-end. The daily budget for the full itinerary, including flights, is about $100–250, with the island segment and private tours significantly increasing costs. Compare prices and book early.
