Classic 8-Day New Zealand Itinerary: Christchurch — Mount Cook — Queenstown — Milford Sound
Experience the best of the South Island: glacier lakes, snow-capped mountains, the adventure capital, and world-class fjords — all by self-drive.
Itinerary Overview
Day 1: Christchurch → Day 2: Lake Tekapo → Day 3: Mount Cook → Day 4: Wanaka → Days 5–7: Queenstown → Day 8: Milford Sound or return. It’s recommended to pick up your rental car in Christchurch and return it in Queenstown. The total drive is about 1,000 km with good roads but many mountain passes.
Days 1–2: Christchurch and Lake Tekapo
- Day 1: Arrive in Christchurch, explore the Cathedral Square ruins, Avon River, and the Botanic Gardens to get a feel for this garden city undergoing renewal.
- Day 2: Drive to Lake Tekapo. The Church of the Good Shepherd by the lake is a classic photo spot. At night, it’s an International Dark Sky Reserve with excellent stargazing conditions.
Days 3–4: Mount Cook and Wanaka
- Day 3: Travel along Lake Pukaki to Aoraki / Mount Cook National Park. Hike the Hooker Valley Track (around 3 hours round trip) for close-up views of New Zealand’s highest peak and glaciers.
- Day 4: Cross Lindis Pass to Wanaka. The lone tree in the lake is a popular photo spot. You can also hike Roy’s Peak (at your own fitness level).
Days 5–7: Queenstown
Queenstown is the travel hub of the South Island. Ride the Skyline Gondola for views over Lake Wakatipu, stroll around the lakeside town and Arrowtown, and try adrenaline activities like bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, or paragliding. You can also join a day tour to Glenorchy and famous movie filming locations. For a quieter experience, book a wine tasting at a local winery or take a lake cruise on a historic steamship.
Day 8: Milford Sound
Depart from Queenstown to Milford Sound, passing Mirror Lakes, the Homer Tunnel, and waterfalls. Take a cruise through the fjord to see cliffs, waterfalls, and seals. The full drive is long, but you can shorten the trip by starting from Te Anau. Return to Queenstown after the visit.
Tips
- New Zealand drives on the left, and mountain roads have many curves. Allow plenty of driving time and avoid fatigue.
- Accommodation and car rentals are in high demand during peak season. It’s best to book several months in advance.
- Mountain weather is changeable. Check the forecast and road conditions before setting out, and bring windproof and waterproof clothing.
