D1–D2 Niamey → D3 Koure Giraffes → D4–D5 W National Park → D6 Return to Niamey for supplies → D7 Departure from Niamey. This route focuses on the relatively stable southern part of Niger. The northern areas of Agadez and the Ténéré Desert carry high security risks and are not included in this itinerary. If visiting these regions, a separate and thorough risk assessment is required.
After arriving in Niamey, check into your hotel. In the afternoon, take a stroll along the Kennedy Bridge by the Niger River, and watch the sunset by the riverbank in the evening to experience the rhythm of this riverside city.
In the morning, visit the National Museum (Musée National Boubou Hama), which features ethnographic exhibits, a crafts workshop, and a small zoo — a great window into the cultures of Niger’s various ethnic groups. In the afternoon, explore the Grand Marché (main market) to shop for leather goods, silver jewelry, and indigo fabrics. Keep your valuables secure.
Drive for just over an hour to Koure, where, with a guide, you can visit the last population of giraffes in West Africa. This is Niger’s most iconic natural attraction. It’s recommended to set off early in the morning, with optional stops in farmland and villages along the way.
Head to the southwestern W National Park, a transboundary nature reserve shared with Benin and Burkina Faso. With a guide and security personnel, go on a wildlife safari where you may spot elephants, hippos, antelopes, and a variety of birds. The park has limited facilities, so bring your own drinking water and supplies. Always follow guide instructions, stay with the group, and avoid approaching the border areas.
Return to Niamey to rest and recharge. You can pick up souvenirs by the river or at the market. In the evening, enjoy local cuisine and reflect on your journey.
Pack and head to the airport for your departure. If time allows, consider adding a half-day city tour in Niamey before leaving.
