Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 7 days
From the colonial streets of the capital to the diving towns along the Golden Coast, and on to the white-sand coral reefs of Bazaruto, experience the best of southern Mozambique in one trip.

Itinerary Overview

Day 1–2: Maputo → Day 3: Fly to Vilanculos → Days 4–5: Bazaruto Archipelago → Day 6: Inhambane and Tofo → Day 7: Return to Maputo for departure. Domestic flights connect the southern destinations, with about a 2-hour drive between Vilanculos and Inhambane.

Day 1: Maputo – Colonial Architecture and Street Life

After arriving at Maputo International Airport, head into the city and explore the downtown area on foot in the afternoon: visit the Iron House (Casa de Ferro), Maputo Railway Station, Independence Square, and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. In the evening, experience the lively atmosphere at Mercado Central (Central Market), then enjoy grilled shrimp and peri-peri chicken at a seafood restaurant along the seaside promenade.

Day 2: Maputo Bay and Katembe

Visit the Maputo Fortress and the Natural History Museum in the morning. In the afternoon, cross the Maputo–Katembe Suspension Bridge to explore the fishing villages and beaches on the Katembe side. Stroll along Maputo Bay in the evening and watch the sunset.

Day 3: Flight to Vilanculos

Take an early domestic flight to Vilanculos, the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. Spend the afternoon walking along the beach, browsing the local market, and watching the sunset by the lagoon in the evening.

Days 4–5: Bazaruto Archipelago – White Sands and Coral Reefs

  • Day 4: Take a speedboat into Bazaruto National Park. Snorkel around Bangué Island to spot dugongs, turtles, and schools of tropical fish. Relax on the white sands in the afternoon.
  • Day 5: Go on a dhow cruise, try fishing for grouper, or have a picnic on a sandbank. Divers can join deep-sea diving trips to explore coral and reef sharks.

Day 6: Inhambane and Tofo

Drive south to Inhambane, a historic town with well-preserved colonial churches and old streets. Then head to Tofo Beach, a famous spot for whale shark and manta ray diving, and also a great place to see humpback whales in the dry season.

Day 7: Return and Departure

Take a domestic flight back to Maputo from Inhambane. Depending on your flight time, you can pick up souvenirs such as cashews and wooden carvings in the city before heading to the airport for departure.

Tips

  • Domestic flight seats are limited, so book in advance and allow time for connections.
  • Island travel is highly weather-dependent, so build in some flexible days.
  • It’s recommended to purchase travel insurance that covers water activities and medical evacuation for the entire trip.
