Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 days
A combination of the capital’s history and culture with the nearest tropical rainforest reserve, focusing on lemurs and chameleons.

Idea

If you’re short on time, you can combine the capital’s historical and cultural highlights with a visit to the nearest tropical rainforest reserve for a four-day short trip, featuring lemurs and chameleons as the main attractions. The driving distances are relatively short, and the pace is moderate.

Day 1: Antananarivo

Visit the Queen’s Palace (Rova) on the highlands, the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga, and the Analakely Market to learn about the history of the Merina Kingdom. Take an evening stroll by Lake Anosy and try some local dishes.

Day 2: Travel to Andasibe

Drive east for about four hours, passing the entrance to Mantadia National Park and the Perinet Reserve. Arrive in Andasibe in the evening and join a night walk to look for nocturnal lemurs and chameleons.

Day 3: Andasibe – Mantadia National Park

Go into the rainforest early in the morning to hear and possibly see the indri, the largest living lemur. The park is also home to various other lemurs, birds, and orchids. In the afternoon, you can visit Lemur Island and a local community project.

Day 4: Return to Antananarivo and Departure

Return to the capital in the morning. Depending on your flight schedule, you can do some shopping or revisit attractions before heading to Ivato International Airport for departure.

Costs and Booking

Short trips are usually arranged by travel agencies, including vehicles, drivers, guides, park entry tickets, and accommodation. Book in advance during peak season. It’s recommended to bring rain gear, mosquito repellent, and small cash. The rainforest roads can be slippery, so wear shoes with good grip.

Transportation and Accommodation

The distance from Antananarivo to Andasibe is about 140 kilometers, but due to winding mountain roads and mixed traffic, the actual drive often takes over four hours. It’s advisable to arrange a 4x4 vehicle and a driver familiar with the road conditions through a travel agency. There are various types of accommodations in Andasibe town, ranging from guesthouses to mid-range resorts. The area around the park can be cool and humid in the early morning, so choose a room with hot water and mosquito nets for more comfort. If you encounter afternoon showers on your way back, allow extra time due to possible slippery roads.

Tips

  • The rainforest is most active in the early morning and at night. Follow your guide’s instructions and stay quiet when observing wildlife.
  • Most entrance fees and guide charges in the reserves are paid in cash, so make sure to have enough Ariary.
  • The eastern rainforest is rainy and humid, so a waterproof jacket is more practical than an umbrella. Wear shoes with good traction.
