Travel south along the main RN7 highway, connecting highland towns, rainforests, and sandstone canyons to experience the island’s diverse landscapes.

Itinerary Overview

RN7 is Madagascar’s most iconic main highway, stretching south from the capital Antananarivo through highland towns, rainforests, and national parks, ending at the southwestern coastal city of Toliara. Ideal for travelers focused on nature and highland scenery. Renting a car with a driver is recommended; the total distance is about 900 km.

D1 Antananarivo

Visit the Queen’s Palace (Rova) and the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), stroll through Analakely Market and Independence Avenue, and acclimate to the highland altitude.

D2 Antananarivo → Antsirabe

Head south via the craft town of Ambatolampy, then arrive at the thermal springs town of Antsirabe. Explore the area by pousse-pousse (rickshaw) and soak in the highland town atmosphere.

D3 Antsirabe → Ranomafana

Enter Ranomafana National Park, home to golden bamboo lemurs and greater bamboo lemurs. Night hikes offer opportunities to spot various nocturnal lemurs and chameleons.

D4 Fianarantsoa and Anja Reserve

Travel through Fianarantsoa to the Anja Community Reserve, where you can observe ring-tailed lemurs up close and enjoy granite mountain views.

D5–D6 Isalo National Park

  • D5: Hike through Isalo’s sandstone canyons, featuring natural pools and Jurassic-like landscapes, with a sunset viewpoint offering wide vistas.
  • D6: Continue exploring different trails in Isalo, visiting cave tombs of the Mahafaly and Bara peoples.

D7 Toliara and Departure

Arrive at the coastal city of Toliara. Options include visiting Îlot des Palmiers Beach or snorkeling in the Anakao Reserve, followed by a domestic flight back to Antananarivo for departure.

Tips

  • Some sections of RN7 are rough, with long drives—allow extra time.
  • Official guides are required in national parks, and park entry fees are usually paid in cash.
  • The dry season (April–October) offers the best road conditions, while some roads may be impassable during the rainy season.
