Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 Days
Limited vacation time? Still see Iceland’s highlights: Base in Reykjavik, explore the Golden Circle in one day, the South Coast over two days to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, and chase the northern lights on winter evenings.

Itinerary Overview

This route covers two classic areas—the Golden Circle and the South Coast. Stay in Reykjavik and Vík throughout. Summer is great for self-drive or group tours; winter is better with a small guided group.

D1 Arrival & Reykjavik City

  • D1: Take the Flybus from the airport into town → Climb Hallgrímskirkja Church tower → Shop on Laugavegur Main Street and feed swans at Tjörnin Lake → Evening lamb hot dog and lobster soup by the harbor → Join a northern lights tour or drive to the southern outskirts for aurora hunting on winter nights.

D2 Golden Circle in One Day

  • D2: Tectonic plate rift and ancient parliament site at Þingvellir National Park → Geysir geothermal area to see Strokkur geyser erupt → Gullfoss Waterfall → Add a stop at Kerið volcanic crater lake on the way back → Overnight in Reykjavik, soak in a city thermal pool in the evening.

D3 Deep South to Vík

  • D3: Walk behind Seljalandsfoss waterfall → Skógafoss Waterfall and Glacial Museum → Dyrhólaey sea arch → Vík’s black sand beach and Reynisdrangar sea stacks → Overnight in Vík, wait for auroras right outside town on clear nights.

D4 Glacier Lagoon & Return

  • D4: Drive two hours early to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon and Diamond Beach → On the way back, stop at Fjallsárlón or Skaftafell Glacier Viewpoint if time allows → Return the rental car in the evening, catch a late flight or add a Blue Lagoon soak to end the trip.

Tips

  • The four-day pace is tight. Winter daylight lasts only four to five hours—plan key sights around noon.
  • Black sand beaches and the glacier lagoon are windy; windproof and waterproof jackets work better than umbrellas.
  • Blue Lagoon and Sky Lagoon require advance booking on their websites. A soak on the way back makes a classic ending.
  • Book rental cars at least a week in advance for better rates. Choose studded tires and 4WD for winter.
  • This four-day route stays on the South Coast, where gas stations can be 100 km apart. Refuel when below half a tank.
  • Jökulsárlón may close temporarily in winter due to snowstorms. Keep a half-day buffer and avoid booking a flight for the night.
  • Reykjavik parking is zoned and time-based. Some streets offer free parking at night—check the color-coded signs.
  • Glacier lagoon boat tours and glacier hikes require advance tickets. They often sell out in peak season with limited rescheduling options.
  • Seljalandsfoss’s water curtain walkway is slippery. Waterproof pants beat umbrellas, and protect your camera with a rain cover.
  • Vík’s gas station convenience store is the last supply point before the glacier lagoon. Fill up on fuel and snacks before heading there.
