Iceland Ring Road 7-Day Circuit: Golden Circle, South Coast Glacier Lagoon & North Shore Whale Watching
Drive clockwise along the 1,330-km Ring Road to cover Iceland’s highlights: the three main sites of the Golden Circle, the black sand beaches and glacier lagoon on the south coast, the eastern fjords, the geothermal wonders of Mývatn, and whale watching in Húsavík.
Trip Overview
Day 1–2: Reykjavik & the Golden Circle → Day 3: South Coast Waterfalls & Black Sand Beach → Day 4: Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon → Day 5: Eastern Fjords to Mývatn → Day 6: North Shore Akureyri & Whale Watching → Day 7: Return West to the Capital. The entire route follows the Ring Road as its backbone. Driving in either direction is fine in summer, but only the south coast section is recommended in winter.
Day 1 Reykjavik: The Smoke-Free City
- Day 1: Pick up your rental car at Keflavík Airport → Stop by the Blue Lagoon for a soak to adjust to the time difference → Arrive in Reykjavik and visit Hallgrímskirkja Church (you can climb the tower for views of the colorful rooftops) → Walk around Tjörnin Lake, see the Sun Voyager sculpture, and have dinner at the harbor.
Day 2 Golden Circle: Iceland’s Essential Starter
- Day 2: Visit Þingvellir National Park to see the rift between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates and the site of the ancient Althing parliament → Explore the Geysir geothermal area where Strokkur erupts every few minutes → Admire the double-tiered Gullfoss waterfall → Stay overnight in Selfoss or Hella.
Day 3 South Coast: Waterfalls & Black Sand Beach
- Day 3: Walk behind the curtain of water at Seljalandsfoss → Climb to the top of Skógafoss for panoramic views → Visit the town near Sólheimajökull glacier → Check out the sea arch at Dyrhólaey and Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach (watch for sneaker waves—stay on marked paths) → Overnight in Vík.
Day 4 Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
- Day 4: See Svartifoss waterfall and the lava fields → Take an amphibious boat tour on Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon to see floating icebergs → Visit the nearby Diamond Beach to photograph ice chunks on the shore → Overnight in Höfn, and try the famous lobster soup for dinner.
Day 5 Eastern Fjords & Mývatn
- Day 5: Drive north along the winding roads of the Eastfjords, with a stop in Egilsstaðir to rest → Arrive in the Mývatn area in the evening, relax in the Mývatn Nature Baths, and explore pseudocraters and geothermal mud pools → Overnight in Mývatn or Reykjahlíð.
Day 6 North Shore: Akureyri & Whale Watching
- Day 6: Visit Dettifoss (one of Europe’s most powerful waterfalls) → See Goðafoss → Take a traditional wooden boat whale-watching tour in Húsavík → Arrive in Akureyri, the capital of the north, and explore the botanical gardens and the iconic heart-shaped traffic light → Overnight in Akureyri.
Day 7 Return West
- Day 7: Drive the Hraunfossar lava loop → If time allows, visit Kirkjufell mountain on the Snæfellsnes Peninsula → Return to Reykjavik via the undersea tunnel, pick up any last-minute souvenirs, and depart.
Tips
- When driving clockwise, ocean views are on your right, making it easier to pull over for photos.
- Refuel daily using N1 or Orkan self-service pumps, and ensure your credit card has enough pre-authorization limit.
- In summer, the midnight sun can cause fatigue—take a break every two hours and avoid driving at night if possible.
